Slotkin Proposes Nationwide Ban on Students' Cellphone Use in US K-12 Schools

Sen. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., called Thursday for the federal government to “ban cellphones in every K-12 classroom in America,” reflecting similar recent state-level pushes to bar students from using smartphones and other mobile devices in school (see 2501290066). Slotkin and Sen. Jim Banks, R-Ind., last week filed the Restoring Our Educational Focus on Children of U.S. Servicemembers at DOD Education Activity (DODEA) Act to bar students at K-12 schools on U.S. military bases from using cellphones during school hours.

“Too many students are lagging in the people and problem-solving skills that will be even more valuable in the future economy, and that's largely because of social media and cellphones,” Slotkin said during a Center for American Progress Action event. “Congress and the courts should hold social media companies accountable for using algorithms that get our kids addicted to extreme content. Rules of the road for AI are absolutely vital, because if we've learned anything from the internet revolution, the tech industry will not police itself.”
