Virgin Island Telephone Seeks Extension of Transitional Support
Virgin Island Telephone, formerly known as Viya, asked the FCC to act on the company's request to extend transitional high-cost support that's set to expire at the end of the year under a 2023 order.

Following two hurricanes in 2017, “nearly all structures in the Territory were destroyed or damaged, a significant share of the population was displaced, and the USVI economy -- which was weak before -- was decimated,” said a filing posted Thursday in docket 10-90. Restoration of the fixed wireline network took much longer than wireless restoration, the provider said. “The damage was colossal. In addition to communications infrastructure, most other infrastructure in the USVI also was destroyed, including the electrical grid, and most roads were rendered impassable.”
