WISPA Asks FCC for Additional Guidance on Broadband Data Collection Submissions
WISPA urged the FCC this week to release the data specifications that providers should follow when seeking to restore locations in the broadband data collection (BDC) and to post a public notice with detailed guidance. The FCC Office of Economics and Analytics was instructed to provide direction, in consultation with other bureaus and offices, in an order last year, WISPA noted.

“With no process in place, many locations where broadband service is available as of the BDC reporting date are not recognized on the National Broadband Map or Fabric,” which “means that the Map and Fabric are not current or accurate,” WISPA said in a filing Monday in docket 19-195. As a result, states and territories using the map and fabric to help identify unserved and underserved locations are “relying on bad data,” the group said. “This leads to government funding for broadband projects where there is already an established provider serving those locations, wasting taxpayer dollars and undermining broadband networks built with private funding.”
