Democratic Leaders Bow Continuing Resolution That Restores CPB's FY26 Funding

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, both D-N.Y., released a new proposed continuing resolution Wednesday night that would extend federal appropriations past Sept. 30 and restore CPB's $535 million in rescinded FY 2026 funding. The Senate and House Appropriations committees already advanced versions of their Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies subcommittees’ FY26 bills that don't include CPB (see 2507310062 and 2509100065).

At a Wednesday night news conference, Schumer said Democrats will “sit down and negotiate if [Republicans] will sit down and negotiate.” Democrats “don’t have a red line, but we know we have to help the American people,” he said. “We know our bill does. We know the American people will reject the status quo embodied in the Republican bill.”

Lobbyists said Republicans are unlikely to support the legislation, which would keep the government funded through Oct. 31. GOP leaders have already proposed their own CR language, which doesn't include additional legislation provisions and would keep the government open until Nov. 21.
