Geophysical Survey Systems Asks for FCC Action on 2019 UWB Waiver Request
Geophysical Survey Systems Inc. (GSSI) asked the FCC to act on its 2019 request for a waiver of commission rules for ultra-wideband ground-penetrating radar devices to allow the certification and marketing of a new device it's developing. The device would help autonomous vehicles in stay in a lane.

Since its first filing, GSSI “has submitted detailed technical documentation, test data, and responses to Commission and third-party concerns,” said a filing posted Wednesday in docket 19-155. “The waiver has now been pending for more than six years.” GSSI noted that the agency granted “a substantially similar waiver” to WaveSense, a competitor, in 2023. “In granting the WaveSense request, the Commission found that the technology posed negligible interference risk and advanced the public interest by enabling safer autonomous vehicle operation.” WaveSense is now ground-penetrating radar.
