New Export Controls on Two Chipmakers May Foreshadow More Steps, Firm Says
New export license requirements that the Trump administration recently imposed on chipmakers Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) may not be the last of such actions, Miller & Chevalier said in an alert April 21.

The Bureau of Industry and Security told the two companies they must begin obtaining licenses to export certain artificial intelligence chips to China, including Hong Kong and Macau, and U.S. arms-embargoed countries (see 2504160026). BIS seems to have imposed the controls by issuing “is informed" letters to the companies, the alert says.
“BIS likely used this tool to take quick action and prevent purported stockpiling of AI-related chips" while it considers a broader, stricter rewrite of the previous administration's export controls on China, Miller & Chevalier wrote. Additional "is informed" letters on AI chips are expected.
