Reintroduced House Measure Calls for Arms Embargo on Myanmar

Rep. Claudia Tenney, R-N.Y., reintroduced a resolution Feb. 4 urging the U.N. Security Council to impose an arms embargo on Myanmar's military.

The proposal comes in response to the military’s coup against Myanmar’s democratically elected civilian government four years ago and its often-violent crackdown on dissent since then. The legislation notes that the U.S. has already sanctioned military officials and entities linked to coup leaders.

"We must hold the [military] accountable and support the restoration of democracy" in Myanmar, Tenney said. Her resolution, which has seven Democratic and Republican co-sponsors, was referred to the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
