EU Requests Consultations With UK Over Decision to Prohibit Sandeel Fishing
The EU on April 16 requested consultations with the U.K. under the EU-U.K. Trade and Cooperation Agreement's dispute settlement system pertaining to the U.K.'s ban on the fishing of sandeel, the European Commission announced.

The trade deal between the two parties stipulates that the pair will "apply evidence-based, proportionate and non-discriminatory measures for the conservation of marine living resources." The EU and the U.K. "set fishing opportunities for sandeel based on independent scientific advice from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea" that will lead to maximum sustainable yield.
The consultations request kicks off the dispute settlement mechanism "with a view to finding a mutually agreeable solution to the dispute," the commission said. If no solution is reached within 30 days, the EU can request an "arbitration tribunal to adjudicate on the compatibility of the UK's measures with the TCA."
