Lawmaker Proposes Sanctions for Possible Russia-Crimea Tunnel

House Foreign Affairs Committee ranking member Rep. Gregory Meeks, D-N.Y., introduced a bill March 15 that would impose sanctions on foreign persons who contribute to the construction of a tunnel from Russia to Crimea, which Russia invaded in 2014.

Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., is co-sponsoring the legislation, which the Foreign Affairs Committee is scheduled to mark up March 20. Further details on the bill were not immediately available.

Russian and Chinese business executives discussed building an underwater tunnel from Russia to Crimea because a key bridge that connects the two is vulnerable to attack by Ukrainian forces, the Washington Post reported in November.
