Americas Act Gains Democratic Co-Sponsor
The Americas Act, a draft bill that would expand free trade benefits to more Latin American countries while also only offering de minimis at reciprocal levels (see 2301110045), has gained a Democratic co-sponsor, Sen. Michael Bennet, D-Colo.

“Across the Americas, we share deep, rich ties and an enormous opportunity for partnership -- but since the end of the Cold War, Washington has failed to offer a compelling alternative to Chinese investment in Latin America,” Bennet said in a press release May 3. “We can’t let another 40 years pass without deepening our engagement on trade, climate, and immigration across the region. The Americas Act is an opportunity to live up to our values in our shared struggle for democracy.”
The Americas Act has a House companion bill, introduced by Rep. Maria Salazar, R-Fla.
