US Sanctions Additional Haitian Politicians for Drug Trafficking

The Office of Foreign Assets Control added two Haitian politicians to its Specially Designated Nationals List in connection with drug trafficking, it said in a Dec. 2 news release. The action comes less than a month after the U.S. and Canada designated two other Haitian politicians (see 2211040064).

Rony Celestin, a current senator, uses his political position to ship drugs from Venezuela to Haiti and export drugs to the U.S. and the Bahamas, OFAC said. Richard Lenine Herve Fourcand, a former senator, uses private aircraft to transport drugs throughout southern Haiti and has tried to use his political position to install allies in government positions who would help facilitate drug trafficking, the agency said.

“Treasury will continue to hold corrupt officials and malign actors accountable for the illicit drug trafficking that is destabilizing Haiti," said Brian Nelson, Treasury's undersecretary for terrorism and financial intelligence.
