Ways and Means Ranking Member Brady Supports Ending Special Treatment for Hong Kong

The top Republican on the House Ways and Means Committee said most in Congress believe “Trump is right to hold China accountable for fundamental rights in Hong Kong,” but declined to say what should be done if that action leads to a breakdown in the phase one trade deal with China. China has already stopped some purchases of soybeans, but has not officially declared it will cease purchases of U.S.-grown commodities.

Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, during a telephone press conference June 3, said, “I think that would be another mistake on China’s side of the ledger, and I would encourage them to live by those commitments.” When asked what the U.S. should do if China stops buying, he said, “we’re going to work with the administration with what those actions should be -- they keep us in the loop.”
