EU Adopts Sanctions Framework on Nicaragua
The European Union Council adopted a framework for sanctions against Nicaragua for human rights abuses, “repression of civil society” and the undermining of democracy, the council said in an Oct. 14 press release. The sanctions framework includes travel bans, asset freezes and block payments and loans to designated people or entities.

Since it adopted conclusions in January condemning the “deteriorating political and social situation” in Nicaragua, the country’s “overall situation ... remains highly concerning,” the council said. The sanctions allow “for a gradual and flexible approach regarding restrictive individual designations,” the council said, and specific designations can be added. The council urged the Nicaraguan government to “re-engage in a meaningful, results-oriented and comprehensive national dialogue,” and said the EU is ready to help if requested, it said.
